The weight of stewardship

Sometimes the weight of being a prophet is a tremendous struggle. You receive words long before their time, and you’re left wondering whether to speak them or hold onto them until official decisions have been made.
Somewhere along the line, there’s been out-of-band communication that isn’t feeding back through the main channels. At times, you don’t know what to do with that, because you’ve already perceived it through the gift of discernment. Do you speak and risk being misunderstood, or remain silent and wait for the right moment? It’s a difficult tension to carry.
I suppose this is something we all have to weigh carefully. Discernment is not only about what we perceive, but also about timing, wisdom, humility, and love. Not every impression is meant to be spoken immediately, yet neither should every prompting be ignored out of fear. Learning to distinguish between those moments is part of the journey.
There is also another question that weighs heavily: what do you do when you know that passing on what you’ve discerned may place an unnecessary burden on the person receiving it? If someone is already navigating a significant transition, a change in position, or a major decision, is that the right moment to add another weight for them to carry? Sometimes speaking too early can create anxiety rather than clarity. Sometimes waiting is not a lack of courage but an act of compassion.
Then, in time, you begin to witness in real life the very things you believed you had discerned. That brings another layer of difficulty. You’re no longer wrestling only with what you perceived, but with watching it unfold before your eyes while carrying the knowledge that you chose not to speak, or that you chose to wait. It becomes a quiet burden that few people see or understand.
The decisions we make in these situations shape how we respond to similar moments in the future. They refine our judgment, deepen our dependence on God, and teach us how to carry both conviction and restraint. Sometimes the lesson is to speak with courage; other times it is to wait with patience. Neither is easy, and both require wisdom.
Perhaps the greater challenge is not simply hearing accurately, but stewarding what we hear faithfully. That means accepting that we won’t always have complete clarity and that there will be times when we must live with the tension of knowing something before its purpose or timing becomes apparent.
For me, this is where the prophetic life is tested—not merely in receiving a word, but in carrying it well. Faithfulness is measured not only by whether we speak, but by whether we discern the right time, the right way, and the right heart in which to speak. Love considers not only the truth of the message but also the readiness of the person who will receive it. Sometimes obedience sounds like a voice; sometimes it looks like silence. Both require trust.
At other times, it is waiting in silence until the moment is right. Both require wisdom, compassion, and a deep trust that God is able to accomplish His purposes, even while we live with the tension of not yet understanding the whole picture.
