The Price of a Snack
Spiritual food with Jess – Mon July 20, 2026
The foundation was laid in stone and written in blood. The Bible literally gives us the blueprint, the perfect biblical foundation of how to live a Christian life. There is no mystery here. There really shouldn’t even be a question. The answers are right there, shining in His word, clear as the morning sun.
Yet here we stand, looking around at the wreckage of our culture, Amazed at how we’ve gotten to a place so incredibly far away from Him. We have the world in the palm of our hands, we see exactly what we’re doing, or do we… And yet, we stood by and allowed this catastrophic drift to slip right in.
We thought we could play a little game with the Holy One. We thought we could dilute the wine of heaven with the mud of the world. We wanted just a little bit of God to keep our conscience quiet on Sunday, And just a little bit of the world to keep our flesh entertained on Monday.
But the water is contaminated. It’s a counterfeit. It is not pure. You sip on watered-down holy water, and you wonder why it won’t satisfy.
We stand in the light, singing praises with our mouths, But our souls are still starving in the dark. We honour Him with our lips, but our hearts are miles away from His altar. We are perpetually hungry, because we are feeding on shadows.
Reaching out into the darkness, looking for a shortcut, looking for a snack. Just a little snack to get us through the night. A secret desire tolerated behind the safety of a glowing screen. A hidden feast of anger and resentment nursed behind closed doors, a sudden indulgence of gluttony, And all the other sins we excuse as minor flaws.
We allowed our casual decisions & our choices to turn into habits. How Did you not realize that each tiny snack was actually a heavy iron key? With every compromising bite, you turned the lock. With every justified slip, you opened the door.
We opened the door to the enemy ourselves, threw out the welcome mat, And invited the destroyer right into our living rooms. He stepped across the threshold, smiled, and whispered, “Now the fun is about to begin.”
We gave the devil a foothold, a legal right, a place to camp. And now we sit in the ruins, wondering why our minds are under siege, Wondering why temptation screams while conviction whispers. Wondering why we can’t hear the Shepherd’s voice over the noise we invited in.
We cry out in confusion, forgetting that these battles were entirely preventable. These are not chains we should be struggling with or carrying around as identity, Not when we’ve already been given the ultimate answer and the authority to crush them.
But we chose the snack, and so the starvation creeps deep into our bones. Now your mind is racing like a runaway train. Now the guilt is a suffocating blanket, choking out your breath. Compromise has leaked out of your secret life and flooded your home. Your peace is completely gone, replaced by chaos and dread.
Are you satisfied yet? Are you full? Do the nightmares and the panic attacks fulfill you? Does the fleeting reward of your 12am snack satisfy your soul?
We are living a double life that breaks the heart of God. We cry out to Him in public, lifting holy hands where everyone can see, But in the privacy of our homes, we chew at the table with the enemy.
The snacks never end, the appetite for destruction grows, and the starvation deepens. You’ve built your own prison and caged yourself inside the bars of compromise. You’re eating just enough of God to keep your conscience alive, But eating entirely too much of the world to ever truly leave the dead.
We have lost our appetite for holiness. We’ve forgotten what solid meat even tastes like. How much longer will you enjoy the milk?
Is there no Balm in Gilead?
